Kisses Sweeter than ChocolateSoft, flickering candlelight. The smell of dark chocolate Godiva. Alicia Keys teasing your ears in the background. This may sound like a perfect recipe for romance, but don't forget the most important ingredient, kissable, soft, pouty lips. Valentine's Day tends to shift our thinking towards our alluring qualities, and . . . those features that could use a little revving up. Nothing can entice quite like a pair of "come-hither" lips. An unknown author expressed this sentiment beautifully, "Her kisses left something to be desired... the rest of her." Filling material works beautifully to both enhance the lips inherited from mom or dad AND correct age-associated changes.Current cultural ideals of beautiful lips favor a1:3 ratio of the upper lip to the lower lip. At Sutton Ryan Aesthetic Center, we listen carefully to the specific concerns of our patients. This allows us to derive a unique plan that incorporates your personal taste and our artistic, professional opinion. Let's face reality. Not everyone showcases Angelina Jolie lips flatteringly. Most of the time, the natural shape and contour of the lips need only minor tweaking. In these cases lip enhancement can be achieved by increasing the definition in the lip border, accentuating the subtle, dumbbell shape in the lower lip, or creating a soft pillow in the center of the upper lip. Lip correction involves addressing signs of aging, such as elongation of the upper lip and drooping of the corners of the mouth. Whether or not a patient smokes, vertical lip lines can develop giving the illusion of a synched up purse. Generalized thinning of the upper and lower lip leads to a less defined cupid's bow. Juvederm and Restylane, hyaluronic acid fillers, volumize as well as tackle stubborn "smoker's lines". For patients who desire dramatic lip enlargement, Perlane, a hyaluronic acid filler with a larger molecular structure, provides more volumizing per syringe than other hyaluronic acid fillers. The most important aspect of lip enhancement is choosing an experienced injector and making sure you articulate the changes you desire. Sampling rich chocolate is great. Sampling rich chocolate with a great pair of lips? Better. Monthly Education
From a dermatology perspective, there is no question as to the pivotal role that hormones play in both male and female acne. As levels of testosterone rise during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, stress, or menopause, sebaceous glands enlarge and begin to produce more oil. This overproduction of oil will often lead to blockage of the pore and accumulation of bacteria. Blackheads, whiteheads, nodules, and cysts all begin with abnormal sebaceous gland activity. |

The Obagi Blue Peel is a new innovation for restoring healthier and more beautiful skin. The Obagi Blue Peel uses a slow-acting TCA (trichloroacetic acid) solution applied to the skin to remove dead skin cells and stimulate the production of new skin cells. Since TCA is not absorbed through the skin, there are no internal toxic effects. It tightens the skin, reduces wrinkling and renews a more youthful appearance.
The first Monday in May, designated by the American Academy of Dermatology as Melanoma Monday, marks the beginning of an entire month devoted to educating, researching, and preventing melanoma. In the United States, one person dies of melanoma every hour. With melanoma expected to claim 8,420 lives this year, this underrecognized lethal form of skin cancer needs our attention. The Melanoma Message is a hopeful one - if detected early enough (before lymph node spread), melanoma is often curable, with a 99% 5-year survival rate. As dermatologists, we feel a strong burden to inform our patients of ways to prevent melanoma and signs and symptoms of suspicious moles to enhance early detection.
Melanoma Defined
Melanoma is a deadly form of skin cancer derived from uncontrolled growth of pigment-producing cells. It can arise from existing moles or spontaneously develop in previously normal-appearing skin. Accounting for 75% of all skin cancer related deaths, melanoma spreads rapidly from skin to lymph nodes. Currently, it is the most common form of cancer in young adults aged 25-29.
High Risk Individuals
The classic melanoma patient is a fair-complected, freckled redhead with a personal history of severe childhood burns. High risk patients also have a personal or family history of multiple abnormal moles or melanoma. Although melanoma risk increases with age, we have seen melanomas as young as 4 years of age and in every skin type.
Unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation is the most important preventable precursor for melanoma, especially when exposure results in sunburn. We're not advocating complete sun avoidance. Rather, we want our patients to exercise their "Sun Smarts."
Here are some helpful tactics:
When suspicious moles haunt you, get them checked. Take it a step further. Check your moles monthly and allow us to screen your moles on an annual basis. Let's spread the word on melanoma and help prevent melanoma from spreading through Lincoln, Nebraska.

SRAC Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary
Just two years ago, Dr. Margaret Sutton's vision of a cosmetic division of Sutton Ryan Dermatology became a reality. Sutton Ryan Aesthetic Center started with a full team of caring medical professionals committed to providing cosmetic services in a safe, clinical setting. Initially, SRAC provided laser hair removal, facial and leg vein treatment, skin tightening, BOTOX® injections, Restylane, Cosmoderm, and Cosmoplast fillers, IPL treatment of brown spots, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and several skin care lines, including Neostrata, Kinerase, and Skin Medica.
In addition to the above mentioned procedures and products, Sutton Ryan Aesthetic Center now offers FRAXEL® laser treatments to treat acne scars, crepiness of the skin, fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth, pore size, brown spots, and even stretch marks. We have also achieved several firsts for the Lincoln area by introducing Sculptra, the "face-lift in a bottle", and becoming a Platinum provider of BOTOX®. As a compliment to our existing skin care lines, SRAC brought on Obagi, a transformative holistic skin care line, and Colorscience, the highest quality mineral make-up with excellent sunblocking capabilities.
Come join us on the 26th of June for an entire day devoted to advanced BOTOX® injections, celebration of SRAC's growth, and interaction with professionals who love what they do. Dr. Sutton and Rebecca Reinke, two of the top injectors in the state of Nebraska, will provide onsite BOTOX® consultation and treatments at 20% off the regular price. Don't allow this great opportunity to pass you by. Also join us on June 27th from 10am-2pm for our Open House. You can stop in and register for give-a-ways including: A Free BOTOX® Treatment, an Obagi NuDerm Skin Kit (a $434 value) and (3) $100 Gift Certificates. We will also be offering 15% off all products and procedures scheduled that day. We will be providing food and tours of our facility to new patients, so bring your friends!
Thank you for your support and for contributing to SRAC's success!
Most of us know that BOTOX® relaxes frown lines, softens crow's feet, and can lift our brows. Those benefits alone are pretty extraordinary, but as of September 2008, we've discovered a new perk to BOTOX® injections, reduction in facial pore size and facial shine.
Effect on pore size was first noted in the treatment of "bunny lines", those tiny lines across the bridge of the nose occurring when we flex our nasalis muscle. Patients injected in this area noticed less shine and reduced pore size, prompting more study into other areas of enlarged facial pores.
Pore size and excess oil production have been notoriously difficult facial conditions to treat. Although many different techniques have been employed, outcomes have not always been consistent. Dermatologists attribute these inconsistencies in results to the location of the oil gland in the deep portion of the skin, an area not easily treated with lasers. BOTOX® , on the other hand, is injected right into the superficial to deep layers of the skin, requires no downtime, and produces consistently beautiful results.
This is just one more reason to consider BOTOX® this holiday season.
Bad Economy Gives BOTOX® A Lift
06.24.08, 2:40 PM ET
The economy may be sagging, but that doesn't mean your skin has to.
Yes, despite a spurt of bad press about adverse reactions and all the late-night humor, demand for BOTOX®, the injectable drug used to perk up aging faces, is rising. And the doctors who offer it may have the downturn to thank.
A recent survey of dermatologic surgeons found growing demand for BOTOX®, laser procedures and fillers this year, even as a survey of plastic surgeons found that demand for their pricier procedures dropped dramatically. BOTOX® sales jumped 13% last quarter to $315.5 million, according to producer Allergan.
"We are seeing some people downsizing, doing a BOTOX® kind of procedure instead of a face lift," said Darell Rigel, president of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, which commissioned the study.
Jeffrey Dover, the society's vice president, said the results jived with an informal study of physicians he and a colleague presented to analysts from Deutsche Bank this spring.
And an American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery survey this spring reported that more than half of plastic surgery practices had been adversely affected by the ailing economy, suggesting substitution is at work. Americans spent just over $13 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2007; $8.3 billion was for surgical procedures and $4.7 billion for nonsurgical procedures.
Rigel, who practices in
For job seekers who can't afford the downtime of surgery, procedures like BOTOX® have the advantage of speed as well as price. Because less expensive procedures like BOTOX® are recent entrants to the catalog of cosmetics treatments, previous recessions lacked such a trade-off, but the phenomenon fits a theory discussed in another branch of cosmetics.
After the Sept. 11 attacks, lipstick manufacturers noticed an increase in sales and hypothesized that women, concerned about a downturn, were turning away from shoes and dresses, instead substituting tubes of lipstick.
But while economic forces change cosmetic decisions for some consumers, others are staying put. "Certain people have to look good and want to look good," Rigel said. "They have to go without something else."
